Hey everyone,
I went to Northern Virginia Community College last year (2009-10), and I want to transfer to Montgomery College for the summer. Ive been trying to get financial aid for the summer, but after submitting everything (FAFSA, tax returns, etc.), financial aid office at Montgomery College told me that I MAY receive financial aid, but I have to pay for my classes (I can wait for a check, but its not for sure).
Meanwhile, I just got an email from NOVA, and they told me that I am eligible for $2000 Federal Pell Grant Summer if I go to NOVA for this summer.
Now, my question is: Is this grant transferable (since it is federal)? And can I just go to MC and be sure that Ill be receiving the same $2000 over there?
Or do you think should I just stay in NOVA for the summer, get the $2000 aid, and then transfer to MC in the fall?
I kind of have to decide fast, so Id appreciate any help or suggestion.

If you received Pell grants at NOVA, and your EFC hasn’t gone up significantly, you would receive them at any college. However, if you’ve used an entire year’s worth of Pell at NOVA, they may be offering you a second Pell grant and there are special qualifications you must meet to receive that (this is the first year that second Pell grants are available). Pretty sure one of them is that you must have successfully completed a full year’s worth of credits at your home institution and be attending at least half-time in the period you’re receiving the second award, so you would not meet that qualification this summer at Montgomery. This thread may be helpful in understanding second Pell rules as it’s fairly complicated:

If NOVA has classes you can take this summer that will transfer to MC, you may be able to offload your upper division schedule a bit…but I’d definitely check the course articulation carefully.

To project your federal grants for next year, you can determine your Pell grant by finding your EFC on this chart (make sure you use the correct classification, ie. full time):

thanks sk8rmom for the info…
btw, i went to nova today and talked to a counselor, and as it turned out, this $2k is actually the leftover my 2009-10 pell grant (since i was part-time). she told me this money is transferable and when i register at mc, i’ll receive a refund check after a couple of weeks. i also emailed mc financial aid office and still waiting for a definite answer…
