Is Georgia Tech Underrated ?

I got this from a message board somewhere.

My view (just the one I could think right now) : Well, point #6 was kinda silly. And you just cant compare the dynamic, growth-orientated environments of MIT and Caltech to that of GaTech.

See, GaTech may as well be a public university, so it NEEDS to accept a number of students from its state (who may not have stellar stats), GA, hence the lower rankings. Bust still, even Out-Of-State students get into GaTech, with average scores and profiles…(don’t ask for sources now).

I do know that many people rejected or wait-listed at MIT select GaTech as their next choice, and that only MIT and GaTech have all their engineering depts. ranked within the top 10 in USNWR, but the fact remains that students at MIT are on average, more motivated and hard-working than those at GaTech.

My incomplete evaluation of the above comments.

Would anybody like to share their thoughts ?

Your comment and above quote is right, I agreed 100+%.

Out of curiousity where did you see this posted?

I don’t remember…copied it a week ago and saved it on my desktop.

Response to the points mentioned.

I agree. That Georgia Tech and MIT are the only schools to be top-ranked in all engineering disciplines according to USNWR speaks volumes about GT’s quality.

For Georgia residents, it’s even less expensive as HOPE covers tuition, fees, and one new book.

I can’t comment on this one.

Some people view GT’s urban location as a negative. Each to his own.

I disagree. Being a public university, GT attracts a broader range of students, but that doesn’t mean that Caltech and MIT are loaded with nerds. These are independent of each other.

Again, each to his own. Snow, while annoying for drivers, makes living more dynamic as each season becomes more distinct.

I’m not an international student, but I do have a good experience with Hartsfield-Jackson International.

This time, the Atlanta location helps.

I agree.

Yea that is very true. MIT and Caltech just have way more money than a state college can ever have. Money can really push you up the US News rankings.

Yea, Gatech is a very good value school. You’re saving so much cash and still getting an education that is comparable to the best in the world.

Yea, yea…related to the 2nd point.

Atlanta is so cool! It is so much fun. It is a big city and at the same time not as expensive as other US cities. CNN is here, so is Coke.

Dunno about sports…but I keep hearing about Gatech beating Duke in football. Lol, a John Grisham novel…I think the Brethen…featured a game in which Gatech beat Duke.

Lol…people who get in MIT and Caltech are generally overachievers…there are many very accomplished students in Gatech too…but they are obviously not as much the norm as these highly selective colleges.

Yea, Atlanta has got great weather.

Add that my favourite organisation, SGI is just two streets away!

Can’t comment on this.

Gatech is very good in Tech and in my major, Computational Media, is probably head on head with MIT. Google Computational Media and see what the very first link is :D. Gatech is also very new as compared to MIT and Caltech. The thing is…Gatech needs to improve the quality of its non-technical programs. Michigan, for example, is a very well-rounded school, great in both engineering and business. Same for MIT, whose business school is comparable to Wharton’s.

“And you just cant compare the dynamic, growth-orientated environments of MIT and Caltech to that of GaTech.”

Wouldn’t a college making so much effort to improve itself be called dynamic and growth-oriented? Gatech’s Management School used to be third tier…only last year it jumped 9 ranks from 34 to 25. If you are talking about innovative students…it is true that in MIT and Stanford there are a lot of movers and shakers (inventer of Boolean Algebra? Mozilla Firefox?). But there are such people in UIUC too (Youtube? Paypal? LED?). And most of us chose Gatech over UIUC. Ultimately it is upto you to get the best out of your college.
