Is getting into JHU worth giving up my life?

Well I really don’t want to go to a state school I want to got to a prestigious school.

ZD, you’re seeing the world in black and white terms. You want to either work 24/7, or slack and spend time with your friends. You feel you will either go to a state school or a prestigious school. Everything is all or nothing. That’s nonsense. There are other choices you can make. You need to start seeing the world in shades of grey.

Your GPA is low, so yes, you are going to have to put more time into studying and schoolwork. You need to figure out what class schedule will push you more without burying you. You’d like to go to a college other than your state school. That means you need to start looking for options that are going to be a good fit for you, regardless of if they’re at the top of some magazine ranking system.

I don’t know why but from everyone saying that i should find a balance and stuff I made my mind up that I am going to “give up” my life and work my ass off to get into JHU!

EDIT:Wow I thought they would have censored the word ass

Good luck, ZD.

Now make sure you can follow through with your words :)

The point of taking hardclasses is for you to find them enriching, ideally there should be some measure of ‘fun’ in the learning involved and what you do, that’s what college is about. Understandably, you have to devote yourself to some things that might not seem fun just because they are important for college but, what’s most important to college admissions, is that you be yourself, work hard in the classes that make you happy and spend your free time doing cool things that you enjoy which you can add to JHU if and when you attend there. Friend’s can def help you study as well, its not like you can’t take breaks from hardwork that you are doing. Good luck in your endeavors.

This coming from my limited and humble opinion

It doesn’t sound like u can raise your gpa enuf.

@Tenors Thanks I will (well hopefully)

@Hopeful Thanks

@mom2collegekids What do you think a good GPA would be then? Oh and let me add that I am AA male and a family issue is the reason my GPA is so low

So state school, prestigious school, it’s all titles. I know of people who were top in there class and didn’t get in to JHU. You don’t want to over work yourself for nothing, just be realistic you knoww. Its not the end of the world.

Here is the JHU common data set:
<a href=“Registrar - Homewood Schools (KSAS & WSE) | Office of the Registrar | Johns Hopkins University”>Registrar - Homewood Schools (KSAS & WSE) | Office of the Registrar | Johns Hopkins University;

Are you going to be a Senior or a Junior? If a Senior and you get a 4.0 next semester; with your current GPA through three years is a 2.9, then your cumulative GPA will be 3.05 (your 2nd semester GPA isn’t considered in for admission).

If you’re about to be a Junior and can manage three semesters of 4.0GPA, your cumulative GPA will be 3.37 max.

On page ten of the Common Data Set, it gives a rundown of GPA of incoming freshman. Less than 6% had a GPA of 3.05. And only 21% had a 3.37 GPA or less. I sure hope you’re going to be a Junior. Best of luck to you but JHU is a loooong uphill journey.

^I’m going to be a junior but we only have 2semesters a year…

Well then: if you get 2 junior semesters of As and one of your Senior year, that’s three semesters of 4.0 GPA. That combined with your prior 4 (soph & Freshman) semesters of 2.9 yields a cumulative GPA of 3.37 – a chance but much better than a 3.05 GPA.

We’re talking a complete turn around, you know right? You’re less than a straight B student but are aiming for straight As in your most difficult period of classes. But that’s what maturation is about. Best of luck to you. Buckle down.

Well what my problem is, that I am lazy and I had a lot of other stuff going on. Anyway so should I not apply ED to JHU?

Putting the cart before the horse. You better stem that laziness or I predict you’ll still be a 2.9 GPA student in a year and a half.

You should be on fora that will improve your study skills and motivation: not College Confidential.

<<is getting=“” into=“” jhu=“” worth=“” giving=“” up=“” my=“” life?=“”>> Since when was anything worth giving up your LIFE for?</is>

@T26E4 Yeah I know…What’s fora? Do you think I should apply ED or wait until my gpa comes up?

@FirstMove Of course I wasn’t talking literally

Bump

10chars

The ED is your decision. I can’t gauge that - or anything admissions related for that matter.
But I will say that I used to have 2.5, 2.5, the first semesters of high school, and laziness truly is fixable, easily. My weighted grades after were 4.3, 4.1, 5.0, 5.0, (6 AP classes) and honestly, I didn’t think I tried that much harder. I only decided to do my homework. So you can definitely get your grade up.
Just referring to @T26E4 's response to you.

^Thank you

Take up lacrosse.

No thanks tennis and archery are good enough for me
