A friend who is concerned over college names (Harvard, MIT, etc.) and wants to stay in college for eternity usually dismisses anything I say about UCR, inferring that the school is “trashy” and not up to par with his standards (same person to bases a college off its looks, mascot, name, etc.). God forbid some college is not approved by Caltech, for example… that college is not an option for me.
For example, every day there’s a chat about how he plans to go to Texas A&M, or Harvard, or MIT (then how getting this ring or hat from college after graduation will open more jobs in the market). Also, keeps telling me 100 times that he wants to major in this, then next day… this and so on. Annoying.
I am personally not interested in moving away from my parents to a college that a famous person went (e.g he says: “OMG THIS GUY WENT HERE, THIS COLLEGE IS GOOD!”…) just for undergrad like he is. All I strive for is to get an education and make some friends (I do not care what-so-ever about food, mascots, etc.)
I am going to apply to UCR very soon (after my 2nd round of SATs). I plan to major in History and then either begin teaching or head to law school (backup plan). I am praying that my SATs are good enough to get into UCR (even though colleges now are beginning to reduce the weight on SATs) and start the next big step of my life.
Nothing wrong with UC-Riverside. Well, it is in Riverside… But seriously there is nothing shameful about graduating from a state university. And you can certainly achieve your goals in doing so. However, you need less pompous and stuck up friends. Good luck in college.
Hi! Hello!
Listen, there are always going to be people who hate a certain college, or want to make you feel bad about your choices (whether it be not moving away from your parents or not going to an ivy league). BUT if you are doing your very best, and YOU like the college you’re attending, then what else matters? I personally don’t know much about UC Riverside (I’m an east coast gal) but I know that any UC school has a great reputation. No one should be able to make you feel bad about the college of your choice. You’re going to do great things no matter where you go!
Plus, grad schools and workplaces won’t look at where a famous person went. They’re going to look at your grades and how well you did. We believe in you, good luck, and as a general rule, stick by your gut decisions and have a great time!

If you are looking to be a teacher UCR is just fine. Given the reference to your parents are you looking to save and commute? CSUF and maybe UCI may work as well if that is the case. Good luck and ignore your friend - highly doubt he will end up at Harvard.
It’s not easy to get into any UCs now days.
What’s shameful is your friend’s behavior. Go and be a star at UCR.
