Is Harvard OpenBio program a scam?

Thank you! Honestly I hope that is recent, because if it’s not that would be embarrassing on my part that I missed it. Are you applying?

Hey, thanks! And yeah, you’re right about the diversity stuff in their program. I still hope I get in though and I hope you do too! I think I fare better than most applicants because I currently have a tiny bit of research experience with bioinformatics and my essays were some of my better writing. I won’t be disappointed if I didn’t get in though since I’m still a freshman :(. There are juniors and seniors who deserve to get in more than me haha.

they accept 10% of applicants and after the symposium they take 10 of that 10% to Harvard to show off their research.

You still have plenty of time dude, don’t worry. You can always reapply, I cannot. They will understand that since you area freshman you don’t get a lot compared to juniors. Hopefully, at least.

You seem to go to a feeder school. A school that goes completely sweaty over prepping their kids for college and has “links” to certain colleges where the percent of accepted students from said highschool is much, much higher then the general acceptance rate. Opportunities will come your way, but you still have to apply to them and then compete with the rest of the kids in your school. I go to a Villanova feeder (although generally Vill seems to favor private religious highschools).

That being said, the best advice I can give you is to be yourself and stand out. If you are stressed out of your mind (and don’t have an underlying condition like anxiety) and don’t enjoy what you are doing then you are doing something wrong. My biggest regret my freshman year is not being myself and embracing my passion (science) that not only self-closed me off from opportunities, but hurt my health and lowered my grades. Use this time to find what you like and what you want to do, not what you think will look the best to friends/family/admissions committee. I have no doubt you love biology, but stay true to yourself because it does get rough. Oh, and make sure you do other stuff too. Volunteer, start a club/business, grab a hobby etc. it will come in clutch.

I actually don’t go to a feeder school I go to a prestigious public STEM highschool. The school is competitive enough to have high academic participation here. A lot us actually end up going to Penn State.

Also thank you so much for the advice I really appreciate it. Will definitely take it to heart.

Did anyone get a confirmation email for their application? I thought the submission form said to look out for one but I haven’t received mine yet.

Have you received a confirmation from them for your application? Maybe I haven’t received it yet because they’re having problems with their email?

Did not submit yet:skull::skull::skull: still working on the essays.

i have not. I finished my application over 3-2 weeks ago and I still have not gotten one

Hello! I just filled out the application - I’m a rising junior btw. I have other research positions and summer programs, but it seemed interesting and I presented at the corresponding conference so. Idk, if i get in, I’ll go. It doesnt seem like a scam, the application fee was low (relatively, compared to others) and the program is free.

Hey, I still have not got my confirmation email. How long did it take for you to receive the email after you submitted the form?

Around 30 hours. Double check your email, as well as the information you entered.

oh, I entered my correct email. It’s been more than 30 hours since I submitted my form and still have not received it. Should I be concerned?
