Just curious, cause they said u need to complete some activities in order to join, so I am wondering if it is worth the trouble?

Thanks in advance.

it’s an college honors society… when is it never a good idea to join.

^^ Not so simple. My Singaporean suitemate from earlier, very intelligent and now doing his EECS PhD at MIT, definitely said he didn’t join HKN because of the commitments.

Keep in mind I was once an EECS major and got the invite to join HKN in frosh year, and briefly did go see what it’s about, but it wasn’t for me. You should go if you think you identify with that crowd and think it would be good to socialize with, and perhaps because everyone there might be able to give good advice and may be well-connected, but as in the above example, you’ll see that you can get by more than fine without it.

Even if you’re social and fun-loving, HKN may not be your thing.

nice perspective, i turned in my application, and i do see a lot requirements, especially mandatory events and stuff kind of bother me, but i will see if i can coupe with it. hope its worth the trouble.

Is it true that L&S CS majors are absolutely excluded from membership into HKN? Is it worth switching to EECS for the sake of HKN?

It is perfectly fine to join if you are an EECS major, but I would not make it a criterion for choosing between EECS and L&S CS.

According to https://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/ , membership invites go to the top 1/4 of the EECS juniors, top 1/3 of the EECS seniors, and EE graduate students.

L&S CS has UPE, which is the Computer Science only version of HKN and is just as good.

Around the EE[CS] community, HKN is a little more well-known because of all the tutoring we do, but I’d say the only difference is that HKN is bigger in membership.

I would not recommend attempting to switch into EECS if you are going to concentrate on CS under any circumstances. Graduate schools for CS and software companies don’t really make any distinction between the two, so you’re better off sticking with L&S CS and getting into UPE.
