Is IB even important now?

Hi!

I am an international who self studied 5 APs and achieved the Scholar Award with Distinction in my junior year (I am now a senior). I go to an all IB school and was the only one in the entire school to take APs (had to go to another school to take the APs).

I already dropped out of the IB Diploma in the junior year itself in order to study for APs. I am now doing IB Certificate, but I always read AP OR IB, not AP AND IB. I was wondering how important IB is for me now. Not that I will take it lightly, but just for my information.

How important is IB for me now after doing the APs?

Thanks!

This is my opinion, if you have already taken the AP course you want, and do the same course, but in the IB. Go for it. The diploma looks better than the distinction award.

The only drawbacks are TOK, and CAS

Also, remember the IB is a 2-year commitment course. The workload is more.

Alternatively, you can just do more APs.

Actually I just realized something important about IB vs AP.

Do note that some courses are different in levels. If you have done AP Calculus BC, you might want to try IB Further Maths Sl. Further Maths Sl is a lot harder than Cal BC.

Basically my advice is that you should do all the HL of IB. The Sl are really pointless.

I already dropped IB English back in junior year and basically there is no looking back now in terms of going for the diploma. I too totally believe that SLs are pointless.

I am doing IB Math HL. The quality of IB depends a lot on the school too. You can do APs by sitting at home, but for IB, the school plays a very important role.

Personally I believe IB Certificate + AP Scholar w/distinction > IB diploma alone.

By IB Diploma I mean a good score like 38+. I think one can get the diploma by just getting 25 points too.

Did you do AP or IB?

IMO: The main problem would be this: you want to be taking the most challenging courses available to you, and the counselor ticks or not ticks that box on your application. Since you have opted out of the Diploma, and can justify it by your self study with AP’s, that is fine. If you further drop IB classes now, it may look like you are slacking off senior year.
You dont have to woory about the IB exams as much as your class grades in the courses that will show on your applications.

Hmm. I am not dropping any more IB subjects.

In the AP or IB debate, the IB is assumed as the entire diploma and AP as…5 subjects?

People study AP’s on top of getting an IB diploma, so it might like you’re not taking the most rigorous course-load possible.

Just take my advice, as I have said it (saying it again since it looks like it was ignored). Do IB HL, if you really think the diploma will make a difference even if you already got that many APs, then go for it. Otherwise don’t bother with it. Seriously If you don’t get a 7 on your IB subjects, it’s really pointless taking it.

Im an IB Diploma Candidate (in my seior year) AND an AP scholar with distinction (10,11) and I think IB is much more rewarding and are better classes in general. Stick with it. Depending on the class, 6-7 on HL exams will get u credit, which, honestly, isn’t impossible.
