Is IB HL Business social studies or an elective?

On the common app where you list your current courses, there’s a drop down menu for each. Categories are things like English, social studies, elective, etc. How would you categorize IB Business Management HL?

I don’t know if this is an “official” answer (and I am not sure it matters really), but as I understand the content of the IB Business Management course, that would count to me as a Social Science course, which is good enough to call it Social Studies.

Thank you!

Is it an ECON class or a Business class? If it’s not ECON but a business class, it would not be a social science. Econ is a social science. But business does not = ECON.

If there are the 5 topics below - this would not be a social science or social studies. If they don’t have a category for business, then I’d label it an elective. In fact, my daughter had a class in the Entrepreneurship Center and would have labeled it an elective if there’s not a business category.

  1. Business Organisation
  2. Human Resources
  3. Finance
  4. Marketing
  5. Operations Management

It really doesn’t matter. If the admissions officer feels that it’s categorized incorrectly, they’ll change it. No harm, no foul.

But for UC/CSU applications, it’s a G elective.

For the Common App, you can make the case for either, particularly since IB puts it in Group 3. But again, it really doesn’t matter

Thanks, all! He currently has it labeled as an elective and will probably leave it that way. I think UGA has a a way to categorize non core IB classes when self reporting grades but this class doesn’t fit neatly into the common app categories.
