I’m an incoming freshman and I signed up for this class in this Fall, but I’m considering dropping it. Reason being I might switch from a Business major to an Econ major. I’m not too sure on what kind of Business I want to major in and I read somewhere on this board that students who can’t decide what business they should go into should consider studying Econ, since it’s more versatile and useful. So I’m taking History of Rock n Roll instead(it counts for the Arts and Humanities requirement and it’s one of the few open classes that I can actually make use of at my college).

But before I drop it, is it a prereq for any school out there besides Haas?
And should I reconsider switching majors?

My other classes are Trig, Intro to Microecon, Intro to Macroecon, and English 101A.

This is a good enough schedule for your first semester of college. Don’t overkill. You want to get the highest GPA you can if you want to be competitive enough for UCB/UCLA.

I say stick with business but that is just my opinion. Look into finance/accounting and see if you enjoy it. You can decide about econ after taking macro and microecon your first semester.

intro to business is worthless everywhere but the CSUs, UCR, and UCB. Even then I never took it(or business communications) and still got into both CSULB and CSUF which are some of the more competitive CSUs… also got into UCR for business admin without taking it though i had all of their other prereqs done. Did not apply to UCB.

“The only thing that you market yourself as an econ major is
A. You have a college degree
B. You want to work in business
C. You did well in college
D. You are a hard worker”

A lot of people pride themselves about majoring in econ because a majority of UC’s just doesn’t offer an undergrad business major. Imagine if UCSD and UCLA offered an undergrad business program. I bet many people would jump ship from majoring in econ to business quick.

Oh I am a double bio/biz econ major btw if you didn’t know.

I always thought if you were a Business major all these business classes like Business Law and Intro to Business were useless since most of them would not transfer. I understood that if you were to transfer you took the prerequisites such as Math and English and then took the Business classes once you actually transferred?

If you want are just concentrated on transferring just take the classes that will transfer. There is nothing wrong with taking extra classes just to learn.

I took Intro to Business online through the SDCCD school district, and it was great. It ended up not being worth anything units or course credit-wise because I didn’t transfer to a UC that had an actual business program, but as far as life learning goes? Amazing!

It gave a great broad overview of the major parts of creating and running a business- from sole proprietorships to the various types of corporations. Topics covered included HR, supply chain management, branding, liability, product placement/pricing, IT, accounting, incorporation… you get the idea.

I definitely recommend the class to anybody who has the opportunity to take it.
