I’m having a hard time removing enough words to make the requirement on my college essay. One of the people mentioned in my essay is John F Kennedy. Does it look bad/is it informal if I write JFK instead of writing out his entire name?
If it your first mention of JFK in the essay, I would suggest writing “John F. Kennedy.”
what if i only mention him once and that too very briefly

Sheesh, am I missing something? Seems using JFK only saves you 2 words.
The first time you mention anyone, you use his full name or title and name. So it’s either “President Kennedy” or “John Kennedy.”
Honestly, if I mentioned him again, it would be as “President Kennedy.” If you think enough of the man to mention him in your college essay, then give him the respect of using his title.
