would it be a good idea to mention a best friend or very close childhood friend as a hook to get in? I know somebody who is curious about this answer as his best friend is a freshman and he’s now applying to same college and want to use him as somewhat of a hook. the college in mind is jhu.

I don’t think colleges care if your best friend attends there.

I don’t think it would be a hook, but in her “why _____” short essay, my D mentioned she had spoken at length with a current student at the school who used to attend her high school to get more information. It showed she was interested in the school and tried to become more informed about it.

concur w/mamabear. If the applicant indicates that they are actually more informed due to personal contact, that bodes better than just stuff from the website or the school’s vague “reputation”.

But as hook? Not at all.
