I’m picking classes for my sophomore year of high school, and I can’t take any AP classes right now. I still want to do an AP though, so I was thinking of self studying AP Human Geography. Is it a good idea?
Is is a good idea for what?
Regardless, the answer is probably not
If you are not taking the class then you are not “doing an AP.” Taking a test is not the same as taking the class and AP Human Geography doesn’t offer any potentially useful college credit, imo. So my vote would be: waste of time.
The best path forward is to focus on your actual classes. Engage! Participate! Do the reading! Ask questions when you don’t understand! Knock the cover off the ball of the classes you ARE taking instead of worrying about the ones you can’t take.
To answer your question - No, this is a waste of time. Colleges do not care about self-study AP scores.
Please do any of the following with this time instead:
- Volunteer somewhere and improve your community.
- Study for your actual classes and be engaged in that content.
- If genuinely interested in the content of Human Geo, read the newspaper and engage in lively conversations with those of different viewpoints, attend events in your community that can impact change, participate in model UN, etc…
- Help you parent(s) or other family members.
- Actively fuel random acts of kindness and reflect on the good that comes back to you.
Thank you so much, everyone!
If you feel like you will not be challenged from your HS course load and want to do more, you can always do a community college class. As long as you have the time and can commit to do well, at least in CA, there are still number of schools that offer online option, which is basically self study and for CA public HS students, classes are free (or should be).
You get college credits, and you have a wide catalog of classes to choose from.
