Hello all. I am going to become a sophomore this year. And I will be taking Algebra 2 Honors. I want to take the SAT, so that I can get a good feel for it, before I take it the spring of my junior year. I want to take it the spring of my sophomore year which will be somewhere in March 2016, which is when the new SAT comes out.
I just want to take it, to get a feel for it. So I know what kind of “environment” I’m getting into the year after. The thing is, I’m probably going to do bad, since the new SAT has pre calculus and trig, and I will had just finished Algebra 2. So if I score low would that be bad? Again, I just want a feel for it. I’m not expecting a perfect score the first time.
@pault289 My son will be a sophomore next year and he plans to take the SAT in March 2016 and again in Nov 16.
He’s also taking the PSAT in both 10th and 11th grade. He’s currently using Khan Academy to prep with and he hasn’t said anything about it being too hard. In fact his issue seems to be remembering how to do basic geometry!
If your parents don’t mind spending a hundred bucks this year and a hundred plus next year I would definitely recommend taking both the SAT and ACT as they are this year which you could do I believe in November or the last test dates are January 2016. Then take each of the redesigned tests later in 2016 or possibly 2017. You have the unique opportunity to take four different tests and perhaps do wildly better on one of those four than the other three. Some students are more apt to the ACT over SAT and vice versa, and some students will be more apt to the new version over the old version, which you won’t know unless you take the time to find out.
You mentioned UCLA and Berkeley in another thread. Are you in-state for CA? Be aware that the UCs don’t allow Score Choice, so they will see all your SAT scores. They look at the highest, but I just wanted you to be aware that you will need to send these scores when you apply to UCs.
No I do not live in CA, but my parents are willing to pay the tuition. @Ynotgo this is actually why I asked the question in the first place. I know that these schools will see my scores, so if they saw that I did bad my first time, would that affect me?
Instead of taking them blindly, why not just simulate some practice tests at the library or some other quiet place? Then you’ll get a feel for the SAT, but you’ll also not spend a lot of money on the tests, and colleges won’t see the scores.
Why not wait until there are some mock tests available and take those? Since the standardization sample isn’t established, the scores will be hard to discern and wont be available until June at the earliest. There is a chance the March scores will be held until after the June administration.
Thats what I was referring to, Ynotgo. Sorry if I was unclear. They may also consider using the June 16 admin in the standardization so the Mar 16 scores could be further delayed
I agree with @photogeek8 and @jym626. With the format changing, I would suggest waiting until College Board releases their updated Blue Book and then practice practice practice the tests in that book (there were at least 10 tests in the book I used) all during the summer between sophomore and junior year when you have the time and maturity. You will get plenty of feedback from taking those tests and your record will be clean. This is precisely what I did, I earned a 750 CR/800 MA/780 W when I took them my one and only time in March of junior year. Good luck.
