Hey! Okay so I’m asking a question on behalf of my friend. He thinks if he creates an account, “SOMEHOW” his identity will be revealed…SO Here I go:

He “LOVES” Yale and has dreamt about it forever. He only moved to an English school in High School and has been working his ass off with his English, which has improved A LOT. He wants to apply for Poli Science.

His GCSE Results were:
2 or 3 A*'s and 5 or 6 A’s, I’m not too sure, I’ll recheck with him.

He’s doing the IB Diploma:
HL History
HL Biology
HL Theatre Arts
SL Math
SL English
SL Chinese
TOK
EE - History (i think)

He’s predicted 38-40

He has pretty good EC’s and has played the CELLO FOREVER…and is in the Orchestra

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT…
He got 1700 some on the SAT I think (he refused to even tell me the range … -_-)
Anyway so yeah - 1700-1800 some on the SAT - does that mean it’s all over for him?

He’s taking SAT II Korean which is his first language so he’s guaranteed 800 through past papers.

So SHOULD he still consider aiming for Yale?

AIM for yale? no
APPLY to yale? maybe
pick many less selective schools? definitely

Asian musician with a 1700? Unless he can distinguish himself (astounding music supplement? unmentioned godly talent?), I don’t see the chances being very good.
He should apply if he wants because he’s not completely doomed, but he should definitely look into other schools with similar qualities to Yale that he might like.

Oh, also - if he only moved to an English school in HS, what exactly is his immigration status? If he doesn’t have a green card/is a permanent resident, then he’d be applying as an International… which drives his chances down even more, sadly to say.

yeah no see we don’t live in the US - he moved to Hong Kong from Korea for High School, which is when he moved to my school. He’s not a US citizen or Resident + noone in his family has a Green card so yeah…

it’s even tougher for internationals to get in. i’m not trying to be pessimistic, but he needs to fall in love with some lower-tier schools well below the level of HYP. there are some great schools out there you’ve probably never heard of before.

An 800 on the Korean SATII isn’t going to impress anyone since it’s his native language.

Agree with others that this is a super-super reach.

yeah EXACTLY! I tried to explain to him that Korean won’t look as good - but he said that the Yale website said that it doesn’t matter if Int’ll students take SAT II in their native language to make it easier for themselves because their curricullum doesn’t follow the SAT and US one.

I don’t think it’s true and if it is it’s not fair. I mean what if the SAT doesn’t offer your native language and you have to take…say Spanish I mean there’re all these hispanic people who’ll ace it so the test is hard enough, plus it’s not your first language :(
