Is it bad I'm choosing a CSU instead of an UC for 3 reasons?

Foreign Language/Math requirement

Cost

Distance from house
Even though I’m perfectly qualified otherwise to go to almost any UC short of UCB perhaps?

Not at all. CSUs are better schools for many people and your local CSU may be better for you, especially if one of your reasons for attending one is that it’s cheaper. Good luck with your academic endeavors.

@Cayton‌ Does that decision come with a lifetime of retail-level jobs and no hope for graduate school from something that’s not a CSU? I’m glad I’ve chosen never to move out since it seems like I’ll never be able to afford it.

I know people who graduated from CSUs working in well paid jobs (not retail or sales).

@DickCheney‌

Not at all. A degree is a degree no matter where it comes from, more or less. I know a lot of elitist types believe a UC degree is 100 times more valuable than a CSU degree, but that’s simply not the case. It’s more about what you do with the degree and the opportunities available at your college more than anything.

Reasons 2 and 3 are a very big deal.

I went to a CSU because I didn’t want to take the second writing class (it is notoriously hellish at my CC and I would rather be tased than forced to write 10 page essays). I ended up dropping out and now I’m applying to UCs and will have to take it anyway this Spring. :/

Be sure about your decision so you don’t throw a year away like I did.

@doisys you have to take 2 English classes for CSUs and meh those essays could be worse.

@DickCheney‌

Nah. I took a super easy “critical thinking” class that only required a couple short-length essays.

@Doisys must have been a long time ago then because that wasn’t an option for me. The most intimidating thing for me is the foreign language requirement.

Going to graduate school from a CSU is more than possible. It is not so much where you get your degree but what you make of it while you are there.

IMO, one of the advantages of going to a UC is that it makes you a stronger candidate when applying to competitive Grad School programs…

Yo Dick, what are your long-term goals? There’s nothing wrong with attending a CSU BTW.

@zalrons my long term goals are to live at home forever and hopefully not flip burgers
