Is it bad not to meet the character limit in essays?

<p>Some of my essays are a lot shorter than the character limit they give. For example, one of my essays is 1200 characters when the limit is 3000. Should I try to meet the limit, or does it not matter?</p>

<p>Less is more. Lincoln got his points across succinctly in the Gettysburg address — in less than 275 words. Be concise. Omit irrelevant details, clichés, and poorly developed ideas. Do not distract the reader with unnecessary words and repetition.</p>
