Is it bad to want to transfer because of social reasons?

I applied to U of M last fall, but did not get in.

I am at a university close to home now, but do not like it at all. I don’t know whether it’s natural to still not feel ‘at home’ this late into the semester, but I really don’t see myself graduating from here. My grades are definitely not good, mostly because I am so focused on not having been accepted into U of M. It’s definetly hard to make friends at the university I am at right now because it’s a commuter school, and the environment, the people, everyone here, I just don’t belong.

Is it bad to want to transfer universities because of social reasons? I am very well aware that U of M will be much more difficult than where I’m at right now, but I’m not sure whether I should judge my wants right now based on my maturity level, because I feel I might regret this decision later on when my GPA is not as high as it could have been had I stayed at the university I’m at right now.

I think the first thing you need to address is to demonstrate to UMich or any other top school that you’re CAPABLE of strong academic performance, so if you do plan to transfer, you will first need to buckle down and remedy your existing grades, which you said “were not good.”

That said, I know a Michigan resident who went to a regional university and was really unhappy there due to the commuter feel. It took him three tries, but eventually he was accepted to UMich as a transfer (for his junior year) and was very happy there, and happy to have graduated there…even though there’s no doubt his GPA would likely have been “higher” at the less rigorous school.

On one hand, you’ve got to make the most of what you’ve got in hand. On the other, if you can stay focused and do well, you’ve also got a better shot at getting to where you want to be. Best wishes.

“My grades are definitely not good…”

If your grades are not good now, how would you expect to transfer into Michigan? Perhaps you need to look into another school that fits your needs socially?

Tough Love: Please stop obsessing about what was not meant to be. Make the best out of the current college. GL.
