Is it bad to write an essay about being a first-gen college student?

Seemingly, this is a really common topic to write about these days. Not that it’s bad, but I feel like it might be generic?

I’m wondering because I wrote an essay about how I grew up in my parents’ hair salon (they pursued this career because it was cheaper than going to college in Asia; they immigrated to the States when I was born and started the business) and how I saw their sacrifices as I began to give my own.

I’d help out late after school, train helpers, translate between customers and my parents, build the reservation website, etc.

I was hoping this would put enough of a twist on the typical first-generation story but I could be wrong. What do you think?

It sounds fine. The topic is not nearly as important as what you share about yourself. As you write the essay, keep in mind that you want to show admissions officers attributes that will make you a valuable/contributing member of the incoming class. Start with an outline or draft and see how it goes.

CC does have volunteers who will read your essay. Follow instructions in the College Essay page if interested.

The most important thing about your essay is that it be authentic and written in your own voice.
