How can one forget one’s own mistakes and move on with life? Humans make mistakes. Agreed. But mistakes are not to be forgotten but rather to be remembered so that one does not commit the same mistake again. It works as an element which keeps one on the right track. The life of Thomas Alva Edison and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter are apt examples to prove my stand.

Thomas Alva Edison is regarded as the “Father of Inventions”. He spent most of his life working for the invention of light bulb. To invent the light bulb, he tried many times but could not invent it due to some mistake or the other. It were these mistakes that helped him overcome all the faults in his model and finally invent the light bulb. His famous quote “I’ve not failed, I have found 10,000 ways that won’t work” are a testament to the fact that mistakes are not to be forgotten, but to be remembered.

As Edison remembered his mistakes, Hester Prynne, the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter also learned from her mistakes and never forgot about them. The Scarlet Letter on her Bosom did not allow her to forget about her mistake of adultery. Due to this, she was always submissive, docile and helpful to people around her. Her exemplary behaviour made people change their perception about her. She became a motherly figure rather than a sinner. Hence, she remembered her mistakes and finally was not a misfit in the society.

Mistakes or failures help us to excel in life. The above two examples aptly prove this. Thus one should always remember his/her mistake so that he/she does not repeat it ever.
