is it common or necessary to max out the max-12 rule?

I know that Princeton doesn’t allow you to take more than 12 departmental courses in any department. But do concentrators commonly take that many courses in their department anyway? Is it necessary?

I think it’s pretty rare to actually max out the rule; they also recently amended the rule so that it’s harder to max out (I think something like, if you take pre-req courses your freshman year they won’t count in the 12 in that department, among other tweaks)

I see… thanks! makes planning much easier. before, i thought everybody took 12 departmental courses as the norm.
