Is it difficult to transfer out of UC?

I will be going to college this Fall. I have chosen to attend one of the UC’s, but I already have transferring in mind - after one year, if possible. I want to transfer to privates that I wanted to attend but weren’t really “up to their pars” with my high school GPA - specifically Vanderbilt, Emory, Rice, and Boston College.

But I hear that it is very, very difficult to transfer from a UC to a private 4-year university, especially prestigious ones like I’ve listed, since UC’s are extremely difficult to achieve a good GPA.

If anyone has insight or experiences of transferring from a UC to a private, I’d LOVE to hear anything! Any information/tips are greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

While I don’t know the specifics of transferring to private schools, I can dispel the rumor that it is hard to garner a high GPA at a UC. Admittedly, I attend UCSB and not UCLA or Cal, but getting a high GPA is easy, provided you put the time in.

3.80 speaking here.

I’m going to UC Davis…which I think is pretty similar in difficulty (I heard) to UCSB right? That would make me feel so much better…

Ease of getting a high GPA varies with major. If you are getting a 3.0 in Mechanical Engineering at UC Davis, you’re doing really good. Other majors are much easier to get high GPA’s.

Usually, transfer schools take difficulty of your course load into consideration when making their decisions. If it’s easy to get a 3.5+ in your major, do it.

One other thing, only transfer to these schools if they offer you scholarships that bring down the cost to where it’s comparable to UC Davis. There’s no sense in mortgaging your future, just to say that you went to Emory. I turned down an admission offer to grad school at Georgia Tech, since they didn’t offer me any financial assistance, and Auburn University offered me a full research assistantship.

im going to uc davis this fall too!
and i kinda want to transfer out too, after a year and all
got scared by the $300 million budget cut in all college/univ. in calif recently :/

I am not sure if it is really that hard to get a good GPA at a UC but you will probably need one to succeed in transferring to the schools you mentioned. Except for Berkeley and possibly UCLA, East coast schools like Emory and Boston College probably do not know a lot about the other UCs and may not fully appreciate the high level of academic quality and rigor found at a school like UC Davis.
