Is it going to be impossible to get into Stanford (or anywhere)? How will yields be?

My friends and I were recently discussing the impending impossibility of admission to Stanford early this year:

1) Switched to common app = increased applicant pool.
2) 2008 = largest class of high school Seniors thus far.
3) End of H, P, UVA Early programs = inundation of Stanford early program with tons of qualified students who otherwise may not have even applied.

So, it seems S will be able to hand pick the best of the best for its class of 2012 (even more so than usual), and reject the rest.

BUT

1) How many students will get into S and say “forget H/P, I’m sticking with S.”?
2) How many students will get into S and then apply regular to and get into H/P and choose H/P over S?
3) How high/low/generally effed up are yields likely to be at S/H/P?

MOREOVER:

All the kids who would have normally applied and gotten into S early but this year get rejected, plus all the kids who will apply regular to H/P when they would have applied early last year (who no longer have the luxury of applying to only one school) will all be applying to other schools like Northwestern, Amherst, Williams, the like. Won’t it then be ridiculously hard to get into these schools as well?

Life is gonna be hell for us youngins, at least in regards to these colleges.

Yes, I know what you mean about the competition this year at Stanford. It will be so difficult to get in. Not just Stanford but any school. It is getting so much more difficult to go to top tier schools.

Each college in the top tier will reliably enroll just as many students as it did last year. A few (e.g., Princeton) are even planning modest expansions of enrollment. There will still be room at the top for thousands of students, and room NEAR the top (at colleges arguably as good as, and almost as desirable as, the most desired colleges) for tens of thousands of students. Relax and enjoy your last year of high school, and don’t worry about it.

college admissions just gets harder and harder

If you get into Stanford this year, you should be very proud of yourself.

You forgot to mention that Stanford over-enrolled its class last year and it’s yield jumped up, too.

Stanford has always had more SCEA aplicants than Harvard SCEA or Princeton ED, but SCEA at Stanford will see a jump in selectivity. Stanford tries to take less than 50% of its entering class through SCEA, so it’ll probably admit slightly fewer RD applicants (factoring in the increased number of deferrals) than it did last year. If I had to guess, Harvard and Princeton will probably over-enroll because they’re not sure how their yield will work without early admissions.

Apparently Yale has been so inundated that they’ve already started [reading applications](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=4774672).
