hi,

I have been admitted to UCLA as pre Business Econ major this Fall 2010. I noticed that since I was admitted to Pre major, I need to complete 3 classes in UCLA with at least a 3.5 GPA (in those three classes). I was wondering that how hard is it to maintain your GPA in UCLA? I don’t want to mess up with my GPA and end up with other major. Thanks very much for help. Also, I heard that UCLA’s professor grade based on the grade curve. Does it means a 90% will not guaranteed you an A? I am choosing between UCLA and UCI and I don’t want to mess around with my GPA.

Curves are really class based.

I’ve never been in a class where the curve hurts, but I suppose it’s possible.

Most classes that have a curve set the average at a C+/B-, so it’s not that hard

Bus Econ (from what I’ve heard) is quite a competitive major.

If I were you, I’d take those 3 classes the first quarter I got here (if possible) and nothing else. Then I’d just focus on maintaining high grades for those and once that’s done, I’m guessing I wouldn’t have to be so tight with my GPA anymore.

Then again, if you’re so concerned about your GPA that you’re debating between UCLA and UCI, maybe you should be in a community college to guarantee a high one.

Even if you fail to maintain a 3.5 GPA, it’s really easy to transfer from the pre-Bus Econ major into the Economics major at UCLA so you won’t really end up in a completely random major like History. Since you’re going to be majoring in Econ at UCI anyways, your major wouldn’t technically be affected at all.

EDIT: Also, regarding curves, you’re thinking of the wrong department at the wrong university. Curves don’t hurt your grades here at UCLA. Most tests are fair and the few that aren’t are always absurdly difficult and never too easy.

thanks…this really help

I got admitted to UCI as Business Administration major. I was a selected grant there so they offered me a lot of stuff such as earlier registration date. I heard that it’s hard to get into class in UCLA. It that really true? Or, it depends on the class. How can I get earlier registration date. Also, I wasn’t pretty sure about the major. I don’t really know the differences between Business Admin and Business Eco. Are they the same stuff? I want to be a consultant or accountant in the future. Which major should I pick? Since I am a transfer student and I don’t get chance to change afterward, I need a very thoughtful insight. Thanks very much for all of your help.

Ooohhhh… you got into that program. The Business Administration major at UCI is better suited for your goals, as unfortunate as it is to admit.

The Business Economics program at UCLA is primarily based around Econ with several extra accounting courses tossed into the curriculum. The major you choose doesn’t matter so much if you intend to get an MBA but a Business Admin degree is what you’ll need to be an accountant right out of your Bachelor’s. We do offer an Accounting Minor through the Anderson School of Management here at UCLA that will help you become certified at a CPA; but, as you may already be aware, Anderson is a prestigious business school and the minor is arguably even more competitive than the Business Econ major.

ucla bizecon > uci bizadmin. too new.
cannot take 3 at same time (11, 101 not concurrently)
rarely curve downs for econ but occurs in mgmt occasionally

Cue mnop GPA talk.

^ the only reason I came to this thread.

No, it means that you probably won’t have 90%, no matter your final grade.

if u work hard, you should do well most, but not all of the time
