oh stop hijacking with that calculus crap.

“US news ranked harvard i believe 3rd for selectivity and stanford 8th. and considering harvards early accept rate is actually HIGHER, it makes stanford that much easier for RD (not taking into account x factors we cant control such as what diversity they need).”

Yet in the year right before that Stanford was ranked first in selectivity. Also, the differences in early admit rate is like 3%.

In all honesty, it’s probably harder to get into Harvard. It has the higher selectivity rate, although those numbers fluctuate. One year Stanford may be higher, the next may be Harvard. It really doesn’t matter anyway… the differences are neglibile unless you’re one of those people who care about that.

“Since Harvard matriculants are measurably superior, and Harvard has a larger number of superior candidates in the first place, it is pretty easy to say that Harvard is “harder” to get into.”

LOL@ “measurably superior” esp. “MEASURABLY”. If you went to Harvard and you are really that superior, you wouldn’t feel the need to MAKE SURE people know you are whatever.
Hope you see the subtle point and your own insecurity (guess you are not “superior” after all).

DONT GET ARROGANT is my advice … apply to both and see what happens

so, now that the results are out, which is harder to get into?

while we’re on the subject of infinity: anyone know about cantor, hilbert’s hotel paradox, and aleph-null?

personally, I think the diff. b/w stanford and harvard is minor, indeed negligable…certain colleges or departments may be stronger/weaker, though…

Ok, I’ve seen several people get deffered/rejected from each of them. Stanford is more random in their selections, so its hard for anyone. Harvard just takes the crazy good kids, so again, its hard for anyone. Thats what I think, just from my area.

so if ive been accepted into Stanford, does that mean i stand a chance Harvard??!!

Well…duh. :)

oh…are we being sarcastic now?!! so u think I shud give my SAT IIs and apply to Harvard?
oh and btw, ure at stanford? nice…temme sumthing about the place, i mean im still kinda unsure abt whr i shud go…so u no…jus sum info (inside info ) abt the place…thanx

I think its a toss up. My friend got into stanford, but she got rejected from Harvard and UPenn.

I’m a Stanford EA admit. I would guess (and this is just an idea) that first: 1. US News should be taken with a grain of salt. UPenn > Stanford and Duke and CalTech? Please. 2. It depends on the KIND of student. The Stanford application is very different from the Harvard one. (I am no longer applying to Harvard, but I filled it out.) Stanford lends a lot more room for creative essays, where as the Harvard app is more straightforward. I’m a rather quirky writer, which I why I believe I got into Stanford; however, based on how I felt about my Harvard app, I bet I would have been deferred EA. However, I have a friend who will likely attend an Ivy, and despite her high stats, I think she might have been deferred from Stanford because she tends to portray herself as more accomplished and intelligent rather than interesting. (Neither is worse.)

Salsa, you didnt give SAT IIs and you still got in. What were your stats?
You must have a lot of amazing ECs.

You have to also remember that when applying to stanford, you’re competing with a very, very large pool of all-american athletes with competitive test scores and grades as well as those overachieving A+ students. I would think that Stanford’s admission would be marginally harder, but they are probably around even.

this is a stupid, pointless thread

it seems like almost everyone applying to harvard is applying to stanford. I’m not sure about the other way around, though.

Jellybean24:
“US News should be taken with a grain of salt. UPenn > Stanford and Duke and CalTech? Please.”

um…why did you have to use UPenn as an example to prove US News is inaccurate?

I think it’s a great school.

But yeah…I’d say UPenn=Stanford=Duke=CalTech

What do you think? All agreed?

UPenn is grate. I disagree though. Not better than those. But I base my opinions on this: HYPSMC are nobody’s safeties. Simply put. But the idea of “better” is so arbitrary. It’s really just “more prestigious.”

Harvard=Stanford=Yale=Princeton=MIT=Caltech > Duke >Penn
