Is it harder to get into stanford or harvard?

Is this based on the education you get there? or is this on selectivity?

Again…i don’t understand why you put Duke>UPenn…It’s as if UPenn is a ****ty school.

for an international student upenn is way harder to get into then stanford anyday…the way it goes, upenn tends to take in ppl who offer to pay full (atleast from my school) and rejects those who ask for aid, even when ppl asking for aid have much better stats. The stanford prospectus says, oh we r not need-blind for international students and the amount of aid u ask is a factor is the admission process, but if they really like u and ure better then ppl offerin to pay full then they take u and give aid…take it from me :)

hmm
but can sum1 plz help me out
i havent given my sat 2s and i really cant b bothered givin them so im not applyin to anymr US schools, and every1s tellin me stanford is really the best place to go to…but see ive been accepted at oxford too and i mean oxford is oxford ritE??!
so sum1 temme like the merits of stanford, and really the merits of comin ALL THE WAY to the US…cuz its all the way at the other end of the world u no :s

how much aid did you get?
I hear stanford is not that generous with aid for international students

enuff!
did u get in stangurl?

Wharton = HYPSM, so dont generalize UPenn, they have alot of distinct parts (making it not encouraged to change majors)

How can you compare Wharton to HYPSM when Wharton is only for Business and Liberal Arts?

Yeah, you’re right on the not gereralizing UPenn thing. Thank you.

UPenn harder than Stanford for internationals? ■■■?
From my school [I’m from Asia], five people were accepted by UPenn, whereas I was the only Stanford admit. On a nationwide scale, 30 people went to UPenn, whereas only 3 people went to Stanford [there were three acceptees to Stanford, 5 to Harvard. Out of these, 3 went to Stanford. 2 went to Harvard. Go figure.]

Oxford beats Stanford any day of the week.

“Oxford beats Stanford any day of the week”???

Not according to the Chinese rankings (Shanghi) featured in a recent NY Times story.

This ranking of the World’s Best 500 Universities has Stanford second, and Oxford eighth.

http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2004/top500(1-100).htm

Rankings aren’t everything. In terms of prestige, Oxford beats Stanford any day of the week.

In all honesty, if you’re dealing with such high-level universities the only thing you can do to differentiate between them is the prestige associated with each one.

With all its much-publicized financial troubles, Oxford’s “prestige” is a little frayed around the edges these days. Even the London Times could barely justify ranking it ahead of Stanford by the thinnest of margins - and of course Oxford and Cambridge are both leagues behind Harvard, according to the Times.

In the rest of the world, where its is mainly students interested in the sciences who study abroard, Oxford is well down the list - usually trailing Cambridge in reputation or “prestige”.

We’re not comparing Oxford to Cambridge here. We’re talking about Oxford versus Stanford in terms of prestige. No matter how you slice it, Oxford is a more prestigious institution than Stanford.

As I’ve tried to tell you gently, your view as to the relative “prestige” of Oxford and Stanford - even in the UK - is 25-30 years behind the times.

I agree with Byerly. Institutions develop prestige based in large part on their research. Oxford no longer has the money to compete with the the level of Stanford’s pursuits.

Stanford and Harvard are about equal in prestige, but Oxford is way down there with University of Penn. In my opinion, Stanford and Harvard are the two best universities in the world because of their cutting edge research, famous alumni, and strength of the student bodies. Stanford has better weather and Harvard is right next door to MIT (crazy how two of the best universities are on the same block). Stanford created Silicon Valley and Harvard’s ednowment is friggin huge. They are great in different ways but are equally great.

I don’t we wanna talk about famous alumni here. Oxford definetly beats Stanford on that count (probably beats Harvard on that too).

Oxford alumni include nine Kings of five different nations, 49 Presidents and Prime Ministers of 17 different nations (including 26 British Prime Ministers), six saints, one pope, 18 cardinals, 86 archbishops, three Fields medallists and 47 Nobel prize-winners (including winners of all categories).

khalid889, where did oxford cum into this discussion from!!! but since we’re on the topic, hmmm, ive been admitted to both stanford n oxford, and iv been thinkin u no, its not abt alumni, prestigue history antiquity at the end of the day…its really abt wat edu system suits u better…in uk ure pretty much stuck in ure major rite?? and in us u get lots of time to experiment and choose one…
anyway, ive been askin every1 this question, so im gonna shoot it at u too… which wud u choose to go 2? :), cuz im really confused abt whr i want to go

hey salsa… I’m in exactly the same situation as you. I got accepted to Stanford and Oxford to study PPE (politics, philosophy, economics)! I’m leaning a lot more towards Stanford right now because of the college experience I’d get there. It’s not really about the prestige at all because according to me, both are world-renowned schools. I just think I’d have a better experience in terms of research opportunities, study abroad, extra-curriculars and clubs, traditions, the ability to take classes in as many differnet subjects as I want etc. at Stanford. Still in a bit of a dilemma tho :(
