Honestly, I don’t want to drink. I don’t see a point in doing it, and I don’t think that beer is good for my body (I’d be more open to wine). Someone tried to force beer down my throat, but my friend offered to drink it for me.

it’s absolutely fine not to drink in ANY situation! If you don’t want to be singled out/peer pressured into drinking, have water or juice (either in a glass or in the bottle). Everyone will guess that its a mixed drink or vodka and no one will question you about it.

Oh thanks - that’s a good idea!

I’m just curious - why do you think wine is better for you than beer?

Doesn’t have so many sugar calories, has antioxidants as well. Also, I really can’t drink more than 1 cup without feeling like crap and wine is more concentrated.

It’s not rude at all! I pretty much did that all fall…I play a varsity sport, so drinking on a night before a game is pretty much out of the question. I went to plenty of parties with my roommates, though, and met and talked with a lot of people.

I do second the suggestion of bringing juice or even water, though. If you keep it with you, people won’t bother you. A few times, I would just take a cup, and then instead of filling it with beer/mixed drinks, I’d go to the water fountain and get water. The cups are opaque, so no one can tell what you’re drinking anyway.

people who drink… couldn’t care much about politeness at a drinking party anyway

@nervusbreakdown, that’s a sweeping generalization (as my English teacher would say haha).
First of all, I’m a partying high schooler, and I can’t wait for college parties (because there will be so many!). I’m responsible, I’m smart (top 10% of my class, 2110 SATs, 3.62 GPA…) and I’m a nice guy. I hate it when people judge those who party.
And InquisitiveOne, as for you…who cares? Go to the parties to be with your friends, don’t care what anyone else thinks. I’ve been judged for partying before, and I’ve seen it the other way around, but im in hs, and college will be (i think) a lot more accepting of people. There will probs be some people who will try and get you to drink, but it is in no way IMpolite to not drink. You might have to pay to get into frats though, because they need to pay for the kegs (whether or not you drink anything).

If you sit around awkwardly not doing anything or ever mention the fact that you don’t drink then yeah, you’re a drag on the event and it’s rude. If you don’t make an issue of it then it won’t be an issue.

Yeah, the only way people will get annoyed with you is if you become self-righteous or preachy. Otherwise, they’ll probably be too focused on their own fun to care much about what you’re doing.

Just don’t be that person that sits in the corner scowering at everyone because they’re “not smart enough to not drink” like you do. ;)

If you play beer pong, then you’d better drink your share. There are certain unwritten rules that you would be wise to learn.

if it’s a good “social event” most people will be too drunk to notice

yeah obviously you can’t play beer pong w/o drinking

“Someone tried to force beer down my throat”

this sounds like a good story.

If you go to a party, just tell everyone that you respect your body and you don’t want to **** it up.

As long as you’re being discreet / non-intrusive about it, it’s cool. How much you drink is really up to you, and you shouldn’t drink anything unless you want to.

I often do the juice / water thing and try my best to blend into the fun when getting wasted that night would be irresponsible. Worst case scenario, I open up a can of cheap beer but don’t actually drink out of it. :)

I’d advise you to not say that. That sounds pretty hostile to me and I’m sober right now. Just tell them that you don’t drink. When they ask why, just say that you choose not to.

haha listen to Hawkwings. That would surely get everyone angry. Just don’t judge anyone, they won’t judge you, be cool and don’t shout out your abstinence to alcohol and you’ll be fine

Agreed. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t make any specific comments that may be offensive to people who are drinking. If you don’t want to drink, you’ll probably be fine, but if you say “I’m not drinking because I respect my body,” or something like that, it’s implied that the other people who are drinking don’t respect themselves, etc. Which might not go over too well. :)
