Is it necessary for the prof to say this about me in an LOR?

The prof I did research with showed me the LOR he wrote.

The only sentence I was concerned with is “I cannot evaluate his (me) academic performance as I did not teach any of his classes.”

That is definitely true. He has not taught me a course, but…is it necessary that he says this in a LOR? it seems redundant to me.

It is pretty standard wording.

It makes him look honest. Often times letter writers will note weaknesses too, in order to show that the letter complete and genuine.

I’d be glad that your reference pointed that out explicitly. Otherwise a critical reader might wonder why your letter didn’t talk about your academic performance - because your performance was below par and your writer didn’t want to hurt you?

I’ve had the same things said in my lors. It’s no big deal - How would they know what kind of a student you are in the classroom without seeing you in the classroom? It’s not negative, just letting the reader know what their experience is.
