When the teachers are sending them via DHL?

Yes, you need to have our common app ID on the letters so that when the colleges receive hundreds of them they can easily sort them into the correct application pile/folder/binder. Your teacher’s letter could make it to your binder without it, but the apps folks will have to manually look up your name and take more effort to get that letter associated with your application. It’s just better to make it as easy as possible for the folks processing the applications.

1) The docs should have some unique identifier for you. Your name and high school will suffice if they don’t have the Comm App ID number (assuming there’s not someone with your same name at your high school!). Colleges sort through 1000s of documents. They’re used to matching them to the correct files.

2) Save the money and send via USPS mail. You don’t need to do DHL. Rec letters have to be sent in in a reasonable timeframe – but do not have to be there right before the deadline. There’s plenty of flexibility with this aspect.
