I was deferred today, but I recall hearing that a lot of engineering and business people are deferred just so they can see the whole applicant pool.
For the two years before this year, there were no early action admission decisions. UIUC has returned to doing that this year. When there was an early action admission decision in December, both the business college and the engineering college deferred large numbers until the regular decision date. Typically, about 70% of those deferred by the two colleges were later admitted to the university although not necessarily to their chosen majors. Whether this year will be similar is not yet known.
UIUC is typically ranked 5 or 6 in Engineering in the nation (according to US News) and 15th in Business degree. When it comes to specific majors they are ranked even higher (in Civil engineering, Computer Science, accounting, etc, etc, etc). So there is no surprise that it was extremely hard to get in in the first round. Though if you have good stats, you have a chance.
Has any body receievd a mail from illinois referring why defferal ? The mail also talk about the high academic credentials too…has any body received the mail
@USUG21 Yup. That only further bolsters this thread.
Should we send a reply to email
Supposedly, the number of in-state applicants who were deferred was lower this year: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-12-16/first-wave-ui-applicants-will-learn-their-fate-4-pm.html
Engineering and Business are very competitive to start. Consider that some engineering majors, like Bio and CS are also very oversubscribed and are essentially as tough as a top tier ivy league or other elite school for acceptance.
