Is it OK to specify non-smoking in Craiglist ad?

Son will be subletting his apt. for the summer. Is it OK to specify only non-smokers need inquire?

Absolutely. Those are everywhere!

I wouldn’t rent someplace that DIDN’T say that. Many, many do.

yes, definitely.

I agree. The person’s race, religion, or sexual orientation will have no effect on your premises. Smoking, on the other hand, can definitely have a major effect!

Legal? yes.
Effective? Hard to say. Some smokers try to hide or promise to smoke outside, or some claim it was a guest that smoked.

I wonder if you could ask for an extra security deposit to offset the potential need for odor control in the event of surreptitious smoking. Sort of what the hotels threaten to charge if one smokes in a non-smoking room. If everything is A OK at the end of the term, the deposit is returned.

There are some smokers who are used to smoking outside, even when at home- so I would stress that the apartment is non- smoking, not that you wouldn’t rent to a smoker.

In hotels I’ve stayed in, they have info up front in LARGE BOLD font that it will by a set fee ($200-500, depending on hotel) cleaning if ANY smoking smell is detected after your occupancy. I have read of folks being assessed it as well, tho of course we never have, since we’re HIGHLY allergic to smoke.
