I was wondering if it’s okay to mention my dad in my supplemental essay for Georgia Tech (why us) as a mechanical engineering major. I’m writing about how visits with him to his workplace evolved from being there for fun to learning more about the machines he worked with - things like examining parts and learning the physics behind his work while with him are what I plan to write about.
I was planning to write about how these visits developed my love for tinkering and designing things and probably mention GT’s massive makerspace and how my dad took me to the capstone expos. I am currently starting this essay question so that is all I have right now (sorry for the lack of followup). Additionally, my dad is an alum so is that something I should mention too?
Fine to mention your dad as a connection to both your intended major and Tech…you do have to address why major and why tech in the essay. You can mention he is a legacy. Good luck.
No reason to mention he is an alum as they will have that information from the common app, but you can. Be sure you talk about how you will contribute to Georgia Tech, not just what resources you will use on campus.
Yes, it’s definitely okay to mention your dad in your supplemental essay, especially if those experiences with him helped shape your interest in mechanical engineering. Personal stories like that can make your essay stand out and show genuine passion for the field! Just be sure to tie it back to why Georgia Tech is the right place for you to pursue those interests.
Here is a link to a strong and successful Harvard essay about someone’s father. It was written in a way that established a shared narrative between father and son.
