Is it okay to use unconventional techniques in an essay?

I’m doing my UPenn supplement and I’m talking about how a family had three choices. Is it okay to be like… The family was face with three choices. 1) Choice, 1 2)Choice 2, 3) choice 3.
Or would it be better to say like
First, choice 1. Second, choice 2. Third, choice 3.

Thanks!

I’m confused by what you mean by the family and the choices. I applied to Penn and generally it’s okay for the supplement to be straight foward. I posted some essays tips on Penn’s forum that may be helpful: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1058311-application-essay-tips-commonapp-supplement.html
