Is it okay to wait to fill the FAFSA until February?

The earliest deadline for some of my schools for FAFSA is February 15th.

Yes You may file your FAFSA until February. However, some financial aid may be first-come, first-serve.

See http://www.ed.gov/blog/2013/01/top-3-fafsa-faqs/

@4kidsdad‌ I heard this somewhere else as well, but what type of aid are they talking about federal aid? institutional aid?

^Federal aid that are administrated by the school, such as SEOG and Perkins

Possibly work/study as well.

Okay I will do it ASAP then, thanks.

Unrelated question. My parents are married but physically separated (dad lives in another country and is unemployed). My mother files as head of household but FAFSA warned me that what I’ve entered may be incorrect?

You will have a problem as the school will may make you refile or amend your return. Your mother’s tax return should probably be either married, filing joint or married filing separately (not head of household).

I’m not an expert but HOH could be a correct filing status. Per IRS rules HOH can be used by those “considered unmarried” because the spouse did not live in the home the last 6 months of the year and the absence was not temporary per the IRS definition of temporary(special circumstances such as illness, education, business, vacation, or military service) non of which apply to the OP. We’ve seen this before with other families where one parent permanently resides out of the country.

But fafsa is just doing a simple check of the married status vs. HOH filing.

Okay alright…so everything’s fine? I can’t put that they are separated or divorced…but because they’re not.

No, you can’t put separated or divorced. But a school may question the married and filing HOH part of it. Then you would have to demonstrate it’s ok. Does your mom have her taxes done by someone who has said HOH is valid?

Yes, the accountant who filed it said it was okay. I was able to explain in the CSS Profile but the FAFSA doesn’t have space to let me explain.
