Is it okay to write about a movie?

Here one of the Common App prompts:

Could a movie count as a creative work? If so, and if it is done correctly, is it a good idea?

I tried searching this, but I couldn’t find anything.

Of course, yes.

An english teacher of mine who also works with prepping kids for the SAT/ACT, reads college essays etc. told us that it’s better to stay away from movies, but I think if you can write it well, you should be fine.

Obviously, the choice of movie matters, too. Something with some weight is a better choice than the Twilight flicks or a brainless comedy like Step-Brothers.

I included Inception in my common app and the people who read it liked the reference. It wasn’t centered around the movie, just a short two sentences relating it

Arg… Really? I was thinking of writing about 2001: A Space Odyssey… I don’t really have any significant “moments” in my life, and I consider my inspiration to be mostly self-made. However, if this is a bad idea, please let me know!

…Any more comments before I indulge myself on this essay today? Really, I’m very appreciated by feedback!

yes, movie is definitely fine, just take care of the focus of the essay: it’s about you, not the movie!!! talk about how you feel abt the movie and maybe go on to some parallels in your own life
