(Inspired by another thread in this forum)

Apparently, some people think it’s wise to take out loans to pay for education.

That’s an option that I hadn’t considered. Brief introduction: I’m not a parent, but I’m 26… I have about one year left in a community college, which I will finish using my Montgomery GI bill. However, that will run out, and my parents are poor and have never provided support.

I’m left to myself, 0 years civilian work experience. I can’t establish a line of credit nor obtain a credit card because I’ve never purchased collateral(sp?) as in, automobile.

is it really possible to pay for college with the help of loans?

Firstly, thanks for your service the the country in the military.

In general one can still get student loans with little credit history (after-all few college students have much if any credit). However, given the current economic mess it may be harder than it used to be…

Are there any special loan programs available through the government for vets? If not, there should be.

I think there are, but only for housing. Anyway, I shoudn’t worry too much. After I get my 2 year degree, I’ll have to live and work in the state of my chosen unversity for a year (to get residency).

You may be eligible for federal grants if you meet certain income levels. Also, government loans may be available to you.
