Is it possible to apply both ED 1 and ED 2?

Just a quick question:

I am planning to apply early decision to Northwestern University. However, Swarthmore College is a very, very close number 2 for me, and I would love to attend it if I don’t get into Northwestern. Can I apply to Swarthmore’s early decision 2 option if I apply to Northwestern for early decision as well?

Thanks in advance.

If they are binding generally then the answer is NO. Apply to Swarthmore RD. If Northwestern says no or defers, you can wait on Swarthmore for its answer in late March.

The EXCEPTION would be if Northwestern notified you of your answer (defers or rejects) BEFORE the application to Swarthmore EDII is due, then you are absolutely free to do so. But if they overlap, then it would be a violation. And of course if Northwestern accepts you EDI then the process is over and you must withdraw any other applications you may have pending (RD).

Yes you can. ED II deadlines work that way specifically. A friend of mine was deferred at Duke and got into Emory ED II while another was deferred at Cornell and got into Emory ED II.

^^ That’s exactly what ED 2 is for. The idea is, if you apply ED 1 somewhere else and don’t get accepted ED, you’ll know by sometime in December. The deadline for ED 2 is generally Jan 1. So go ahead, apply to Northwestern ED 1. If you’re accepted, you win. If you’re not accepted, apply to Swarthmore ED 2 and to all your other colleges RD. The only conflict that could arise is if instead of rejecting you outright, Northwestern defers you to RD. Then if you apply ED 2 to Swarthmore and they accept you, you’re going to Swarthmore and will need to withdraw your Northwestern application.

Northwestern does not practice deferring applicants in the early round. It either accepts or rejects.

Wow, im planning on applying Swarthmore ED2, UChicago EA and Penn ED. Can anyone tell me if tahts ok??
