Is it possible to do absolutely horrible on the psat but do well on the sat?

I have a 4.0, take AP and I did horrible on my first psat this year. I didn’t really prepare for it so I wasn’t expecting anything good, but I got a 138 and it shocked me. I’m hoping to get at least around a 1850 or a 1900 on the actual SAT next year, but is it realistically possible? I’m willing to do as much studying as possible, any advice?

Of course it’s realistically possible! There are so many cases in which people show significant improvement in their sat/psat score. For example, I scored a 159 on my psat sophomore year and ended up getting a 2140(single setting)/2200(superscore) in January. Get the blue book and then a workbook for each section. It’s all about practice. Good luck!

If you are doing well in AP Calculus, then you have an advantage when it comes to SAT prep. You already have a high level of mathematical skill. So all you need to do is learn SAT specific strategies, and practice SAT problems, and your score should rise pretty quickly.

Best of luck!

Yes, it definitely is. My PSAT score in October was 207 (not horrible I know), but my SAT in December was 2270. I did only about 2 hrs of prep TOTAL in between the two dates. It is likely that you and I both just had bad PSAT testing experiences. You’ll probably do fine on the SAT

What year of school are you in?
You take the PSAT in the fall…you haven’t really done much math in a few months because of summer break and what not. If you take the SAT in the spring you will have been doing math for many months and will be back in the swing of things.
Start doing 1 session of the practice test a day. Figure out where you are going wrong. Learn from that.
