I’m in my junior year in high school and last year some mental health issues got the best of me and I really messed up myself and I don’t even know what to do anymore. I know its possible but I want to know if anyone has actually pulled it off its been my dream to get into a great private university (nyu is my dream school) and I want to know if its at least heard of and I don’t sound crazy.

It’s not possible. A 4.0 indicates that you have never gotten a grade lower than an “A”. If you have had mental health issues that serious, don’t set yourself up for failure and say “I will only get A’s this semester!”. Focus on doing as well as you can, doing all your homework, really understanding your subjects, developing good study habits, and seeing a counselor (if need be). If you end up with all A’s this semester and next, you have a chance at applying to NYU and probably good options elsewhere. If NYU rejects you but it remains your goal, attend a community college, get that 4.0, and enter as a transfer.

Well, do the math. It’s not possible to take a 2.1 GPA and raise it to a 4.0. But you can improve your GPA with some hard work. Many schools like to see that upward trend.

Unweighted GPA, no. I doubt even with full AP’s and summer school that you could raise a weighted GPA that much. I think if you manage a really good Junior year, that will be taken into account, though. Plus, as @Autumnal wrote, mental health and balance is way more important than NYU or its ilk
