Is it possible to get in-state residency status?

Hey guys, I need some advice.

Originally I am from NM. I grew up there, graduated high school from there and lived and worked there for a few years after I graduated. I ended up moving to TX for a few years before meeting my husband. Shortly after we married, he got a job offer overseas which he accepted. I moved back to NM for a short amount of time and then joined my husband abroad. We have been living abroad for 2 years now and have a child together, but are planning on moving back to NM next year, or the year after that at the latest.

I am eager to start an online program through a college in NM, and originally had applied as an international student not really thinking things through. Unfortunately there is just no way I can afford out of state tuition for this program. I contacted the admissions office to see if they would be willing to change my status, and they asked me to fill out some paperwork and send in a copy of my drivers license and my most recent NM tax form. But I cannot find or access any of my tax information, I do however, still have a valid NM driver’s license so it’s no problem to send in a copy of that. At one point I was registered to vote (and did vote) in NM, but I am unable to find any of that info online either. My mother still lives in NM, she has never left and her home address is my U.S. address.

I guess my question is if there is any possible way I can get around this, or if there’s no point and I should just give up? Is there any possibility based on my mom being a longterm resident and me having grown up there?

Thanks in advance!

Each college has its own policies, listed on their Bursar’s webpages. Good luck.

You can ask the state for a tax transcript.
You can also ask the IRS for a federal tax transcript. We have to do that every year for my son’s school.

As for trying to become an immediate resident after leaving the country for a couple of years probably won’t work. ^Take/use @T26E4 's information.
