Is it possible to get into Yale (Single Choice Early Action) with a 3.7/4.0 GPA?

Hi everyone, and happy Father’s Day!

My (unweighted) GPA is currently a 3.7/4.0. For my high school, this puts me at around the top 15% (not top 10% like most accepted students). If I have a strong SAT score (1570), strong AP scores, very strong essays + rec letters, awards, community service, leadership, etc. - pretty much strong applicant in everything else - and a very strong/insightful “why Yale” essay, is it possible to get into Yale through Single Choice Early Action? I had a couple Bs and one C+ in some STEM subjects in my earlier high school years (with As/A+s in all other subjects), but showed an upward trend and also had a very long-term athletic injury that was a contributing factor. My counselor is writing about my resilience and perseverance with the weaker grades + injury in her rec letter.

Yale is my #1 choice so I’m leaning towards applying SCEA there, but to be honest I’m terrified that they’ll throw my application in the trash as soon as they see the 3.7/4.0 or the couple of lower grades I had in freshman/sophomore year. Should I do everything I can and shoot my best shot at Yale SCEA, or just not waste the time with my GPA/grade stats? Thanks so much!

In the trash - no

Will you get in - unlikely but even with a 4.0 that would be the same answer.

Is it a waste of time - no - not if it’s your favorite because you wouldn’t ED anywhere that isn’t your favorite.

Given your law school dreams and budget issues, it’s a lot smarter than an ED anywhere.

The answer here won’t be any different than your nearly identical other thread.

Too many kids think a rejection is a wasted app. It’s not. There’s no assurance.

You worked hard. You want to take your shot. So take it. If they say no - you have fallbacks you listed on your other thread plus others suggested if you research and like.

Oh and all of them will get you to the same law school.

Apply to get an early answer. Don’t apply for a boost. Per Yale itself - Applying Single-Choice Early Action does not increase the likelihood of being admitted to Yale.

Isn’t this almost the exact same post you made yesterday?

I think this one is more GPA-focused - basically asking whether that initial GPA barrier/expectation from admissions officers is possible to overcome!

I think it’s the same except yesterday you had - or Dartmouth (hard no due to budget issues and binding).

But there’s nothing new in this one.

Your rank is your downfall. You could argue gpa too - if it was higher so would be your rank.

But if you want to apply SCEA to get an earlier answer - do it !!

It won’t hurt anything. It won’t boost your chances though - per Yale itself.

No matter how you spin it, the answers won’t change.

Focus on safeties and if you want matches.

Lose Widener (in my opinion). Elon, Denison and Rhodes make more sense and have PPE as does Bing, a sub for Rutgers.

Since this thread is basically the same as this thread, I’m closing.
