So…out of curiosity i suppose. Is it necessary to share a room with someone in dorms. I know public universities may be pretty strict in this, but what about private? Is it possible to pay an extra fee to have an entire dorm room?

You can get a single, but it is often several thousand dollars more. Some colleges may not offer them to freshmen if they only have single rooms in upperclassmen residence halls.

So are singles avaliable in public universities like the UCs?

It depends on the school, why not check their housing website or email and ask?

I go to umich and they have singles, they are VERY expensive though so I still got a double.

Yes, in the UC’s singles are available, and they’re only a couple hundred more per quarter, which yields to about a thousand over the entire school year. Most people don’t like it for social reasons, basically.

I have a single at a public school.

Yes, I never knew that you could actually buy one, lol. My boarding school had a Saudi Arabian sheik come over and offer to pay $160,000 for a specific single room for all four years. This on top of the almost $200,000 tuition! Insane…

If I could get a single, I would probably pay for one every year after freshman year. I like having a roommate, but I’ve had one for three years in boarding school! Too much of a good thing, you know?

That’s basically what my parents did, but my school isn’t that expensive overall.

At some Ivies like Harvard and Princeton, you can request a single as a freshman, but there very few available. The housing is randomly assigned, and it is not possible to pay to attain a single. Upperclassmen generally have priority in rooming selections, so it becomes a bit easier to gain the single.

Read the housing info carefully for the colleges, and research the room assignment process, there is great variety from college to college.
