Is it possible to sleep homeless in an airport?

I’m just wondering…

after all, it’s open 24/7, no one really notices you, and many people sleep overnight…

i don’t think so. Usually you need a boarding pass, and have to go through security in order to get to the terminals/gates (where most people sleep)

I know it’s fiction, but Tom Hanks made a movie-The Terminal-that focuses along these same lines. Check it out!

So, really all you need to do is buy a cheap one-way ticket and then never leave?

Tom Hanks did it

I think it’s possible. Probably not for too long, though, because the people who work at the airport would notice that you’re always there.

in a large airport, it may be possible. easier if you slept during the day, and wandered around at night. if you could get a job at the airport you’d be set. you only need a ticket to get to the boarding area.

and lots of airports have extensive, almost shopping mall-like preboarding facilities. they should have everything you need.

Security’s pretty tight around the airport – I suspect someone would notice real fast.

noooo sleep in the day, wander around at night. its mostly custodians and stranded travelers that are awake.

i’m referring specifically to SFO.

A large portion of the money saved by paying no rent would be spent on the over priced garbage they call food.

esta es posible

I don’t think the Tom Hanks movie is purely fiction. It is based on a gentleman who sleeps at CDG (Paris). I have seen him. I work for a major airline and yes it is very possible to live at an airport. (Major one). Especially the European ones. As for food, if you don’t mind sleeping in an airport, I imagine you would not mind eating leftovers!

I wouldn’t sleep in an airport unless it had a central AC.

Bathing in the toilet would suck, but theoretically you could live in an airport for maybe a week or so until people would start to notice you. Maybe a month if you were really good. But there are better places to live. Most homeless people smoke and what not, this is not allowed at the airport.

You don’t technically need to bathe every day.
Or even every week. :p

If you could get a job at the airport, why on mother Earth would you be sleeping there?

I read a book once in elementary school about these kids that ran away from home and stayed in a museum in NYC. They obviously have way too much security for this to ever work, but they slept on the exhibit beds and took baths in the fountain while collecting the change at the bottom for some spending money. Every night when the guards did their rounds they just went into the bathrooms and stood on top of the toilets so when the guards looked under the door they didn’t see anything. Like I said, it would never actually work.

I’d say it’s possible to sleep homeless in a US airport for maybe two weeks without anyone noticing. If you want to testify to congress about airport security, try it and make a YouTube video and send an e-mail to your senator. They will wonder how a person could sleep undetected at a US airport for two weeks. Funny stuff.

I love that book.

Hahaha, I often think about how I would manage to do that (certainly this is something I’d do if I wanted to “Azia Kim” an university library open 24/7). But they don’t even check the bathrooms. Standing on top of the toilets would be more advantageous in the case of a school shooting, but school shooters know that people hide in the bathrooms (Harris and Klebold even went into the school bathrooms to taunt the students hiding in there - but they somehow didn’t shoot - they spared so many people for some reason - but if you’re meeting someone like Cho, then it’s probably best to go to the bathroom anyways because the human density of a school bathroom is usually lower than that of a classroom(although I might hide in the female bathroom if that happened).
