Is it possible to still get a B even after failing the second test?

My professor doesn’t weight grades, I believe (nothing said about it on the syllabus). Her grading system is pretty straightforward. you get 4 tests plus the final exam which all sum up to 600 points. She also has 4 labs that all add up to a 100 points overall. So all in all, it’s 700 points.

I wasn’t feeling so well when i took the test and though i studied it the night before, all that I worked for overnight just kind of left my head. It’s a calculus class and I also have other rigorous classes. I’ll admit that because my other classes have given me so much more time consuming work and my calculus class doesn’t have any graded homework assigned to me, I kinda place it on the side and study it last minute.

I still don’t know my test grade but I know I butchered it. I e-mailed her about why I did so terribly and apologized for missing the previous classes (that were review days) because of my sickness but she hasn’t responded to me and she usually has a 2-day rule in responding to e-mails. I told her that I couldn’t call off the test day because I thought since i had enough energy to show up to school, I just decided to go ahead and take the test. It’s not like I was going to see the doctor anyway because of financial reasons and many complicated immigrant reasons. I can’t really get any kind of check-up and benefits that will make an access to a doctor affordable.

Her policy is that if your absence on the test day is acceptable, she’ll drop your grade and your final exam will replace that. However i wasn’t absent on test day, I was there and I took it.

Unfortunately nothing was registering in my head. I did show some work and didn’t leave anything blank, but it was not enough work. I couldn’t solve my way to the final answers but had a few formulas set up so she might give me partial credit. Even then, I know it’s not going to be a good grade.

My first test in her class was a 76 because of a lot of clumsy mistakes (like not putting +C after solving a definite integral), and now this one is probably a really huge F. My first lab however was a 20/20. I plan to do better and hopefully get better grades as I go along the semester. But we’re going really fast and my other classes are just as hard. I’m not getting any good rest. I’m getting approximately 2-4 hours of sleep at night just trying to go through each and everyone of my courses.

I don’t plan on dropping this class for a very specific reason, but I also don’t want to destroy my GPA. So is there hope that I can still get a B even after butchering the 2nd test?

If you get a 0 on the second exam and get 100s on everything else from here on out:

76 + 0 + 100 + 100 + 200 + 100

all divided by 700 points total

= 82.3%

On one hand, getting 100s from here on out isn’t very realistic given your experiences so far. On the other hand, you might get higher than a 0 on the second exam, making a B more achievable. Keep your drop deadline in mind and see how it goes.

thank you that’s what im trying to do. I appreciate it!

Would it hurt you if you ended up dropping it and taking it a different semester?
