Is it possible to study belting and opera at the same time?

Hi, forum!

My name is Jamie, and I am a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma’s Music Theatre program, which has recently been added to the “Big List.”

I chose to attend UCO over several other music theatre programs because it is a school that puts a high priority on the mastery of the belt voice. Although studying belting is not a requirement of the program, it was a requirement for me, since I frequently get cast as a belter. The funny thing is, that BECAUSE I found the correct placement of my belt voice while studying at UCO, I was able to make HUGE breakthroughs in my legit voice using similar concepts…which then lead me to focus on singing operatically!

UCO is a school where students can blaze their own paths and, essentially, “do it all,” should they so choose! I was able to study opera and belting simultaneously with two different voice teachers–Kay Creed of New York City Opera and the late Tamara Long, the original Mona in “Dames At Sea”-- and in addition to my required major courses, I took classes in some of the highest levels in the acting and dance departments. Carveth Osterhaus, who had founded the music theatre department at Oklahoma City University, also founded the program at UCO, so both programs are Bachelors of Music degrees, and housed within their Departments of Music. This means that music theatre majors can perform in operas as well as the musicals. Since I believe that the best way to learn performing is by PERFORMING, UCO’s deparment provided another “plus” for me; professors and outside directors cast freshman as readily as seniors in mainstage productions.

Besides presenting an excellent mix of new and old shows from the music theatre canon, UCO music theatre presents other performance opportunites, as well. A recent music department acquisition is the UCO Jazz Lab, an excellent facility where vocal and instrumental music students perform in a lounge-type atmosphere. Since it’s annexed to a favorite pizza joint, Jazz Lab patrons are often seen enjoying a slice in addition to enjoying a glass of wine! Lately, the Jazz Lab has housed many successfuly cabaret evenings by music theatre students. Also, Broadway Tonight!, a company which brings national tours to Edmond, has been known to co-produce musicals with UCO Music Theatre. Broadway Tonight! recently produced “Grease!” starring soap opera’s Jeff Tracha and “Hello, Dolly!” starring Broadway legend Carole Cook.

Successful graduates of UCO include Milena Govich (Broadway’s “Good Vibrations,” et al.), Megan Osterhaus (Broadway’s “Mamma Mia!”), Greg White (“Nunsense A-Men!” original cast), Craig Ricks (Broadway’s “Cats”), Mat Govich (Broadway’s “Cabaret”), and Billy Sprague, Jr. (Broadway’s “Beauty and the Beast,” et al.). In addition, UCO has produced dozens of performers who regularly perform in tours and regional companies, as well as local favorites in the Oklahoma City metro.

UCO is situated in Edmond, OK, a suburb located 20 minutes from downtown Oklahoma City. Theatres in the OKC metro include Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, City Rep, Carpenter Square Theatre, Jewel Box Theatre, Skyline Theatre, Summer Stock, and The Pollard Theater, among others.

For those music theatre performers who are torn between wanting to study belting and wanting to pursue classical vocal training, the University of Central Oklahoma just might be the school for you!
Thanks, Dr. John and Shauna, for adding my alma mater UCO to the list!

Under the leadership of Dr. Greg White, UCO Music Theatre provides students even more thorough, exciting, and competitive performance opportunities and training from a faculty that also includes Dr. Marilyn Govich, Dr. Kevin Eckard, Shannon Hurleigh, and Steven Smeltzer. Read about UCO Music Theatre faculty here: [UCO: CFAD - Faculty](<a href=“Unauthorized Request Blocked”>http://www.uco.edu/cfad/academics/music/faculty.asp)

Dr. White places a high priority on ensuring that students are immersed in musical theatre literature and sees that his faculty does the same. Classes such as Scene Study, Interview and Audition, Music Theatre Performance Workshop, and Directing give students hands-on opportunities to explore the classic and contemporary music theatre canon as well as creating their own works. There is flexible integration between the music theatre, dance, theatre, and voice departments so that if a student wishes to take more acting or dance classes than what is required, they are usually permitted to do so. Possible performance opportunities outside UCO Mainstage at Mitchell Hall and the UCO Jazz Lab include UCO’s Kaleidescope Dance Company, a renowned company that encompasses all dance styles and specializes in modern dance.
Dr. White also now heads UCO’s Broadway Tonight! series, which presents touring productions, concerts, and exclusive events. Recently, the Broadway Tonight! series has provided UCO students opportunities to perform alongside of Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy (Carousel) and facilitated workshops with Jodi Benson, Olympia Dukakis, and Emily Skinner.
Another notable addition to the school is that Summerstock Theatre is now partnered with UCO Music Theatre, which provides UCO students summer opportunities to perform in classic musicals with professionals in the Oklahoma City theatre community.
UCO is a state (public) university, the third largest in Oklahoma behind OU and OSU, but less costly than the other two. Oklahoma is one of the most affordable states in the nation. All this translates to UCO Music Theatre being an incredible value. The education is top-notch and the price is affordable, meaning that graduates can relocate to more expensive cities without being encumbered by massive student debt. Many arts graduates take jobs out of their fields to pay off student loans, but by and large, UCO students are exempt from this burden. It is tricky enough to navigate the financial waters of an acting career without being saddled with massive school debts, as well.

Situated in the heart of Oklahoma, Edmond and UCO are full of very kind people, which is reflected in the UCO Music Theatre faculty and students. In the business of music theatre, a kind, genuine person is a welcome blessing. UCO students are competitive in their talent but warm in their demeanor. Edmond, Oklahoma was recently named #1 Best Suburb in the nation by CNBC.com: [News Headlines/url

UCO Music Theatre students also have a reputation for being great actors and are often cast professionally in lead roles over ensemble positions. Recent examples of this include Lindsie VanWinkle - Mary Magdalene in The Magdalene Off-Broadway, Ryan Steer - Zach in the 1st National Tour of A Chorus Line, Heather Hawkins - Avenue Q on Broadway, Jessica Chesbro - Fantine in Les Miz at Music Theatre of Wichita, among many, many others. Lauren Nelson was also crowned Miss America 2007 while a music theatre student at UCO.

Because of the myriad performance opportunities in the Oklahoma City area, UCO students often perform professionally alongside not only the best professionals working in the business, but also students from OCU and OU, the other two music theatre programs in the area. Because these three stellar schools exist in such close proximity, a camaraderie thrives among students that transcends the universities and expands from OKC to NYC. New York theatre performers often remark how many talented Oklahomans there are performing in New York. This means UCO students, as well as those from OCU and OU, are part of a giant extended community, should they decide to move to the Big Apple after graduation. UCO alone has a thriving community in New York, and the UCO Music department hosts regular evenings in NYC for graduates to reunite.
