I am currently a student at Santa Monica College in California. I have a 4.0 GPA, am on the basketball, soccer, and dance teams, volunteer at St. Johns Hospital, and I am almost done with all the required courses for my major! Does anyone know if it is even possible to transfer from a CC to an Ivy League school. People keep telling me that courses you take at a CC aren’t as rigorous as a 4-year school. Is this true? I am really hoping to transfer to Harvard or Cornell.

You can transfer from a CC to Harvard: you just have to be very impressive. It’s true that CC courses aren’t as rigorous as those at four year schools.

Of course it’s possible. Probable, however, is another story entirely.

there’s a huge difference between applying to harvard and applying to cornell. for cornell, you’d be very competitive as long as you write good essays. for harvard, you need to really shine and have stuff that no one else can offer them.

I thought I read that Harvard eliminated transfer admissions.

Colleges actually prefer students from community colleges because they bring “diversity.”

Cool, I go to SMC too and am planning to transfer to a prestigious, no-loan college too. There is a workshop coming up in March, I think, at SMC named “How to Transfer to Elite Universities,” or something like that. I think I’m out of the running though, I just choked on a final which I know will bring me down to a B in the class. So what is your major? Have you taken the SAT’s?

Also a CCer hoping to transfer to an elite school; unfortunately orgo pretty much ruined my GPA.
I’d like to believe that transferring to a prestigious school is possible -we’ll see how that goes.
Good Luck!

to everyone on this thread:

it IS possible, just harvard/yale/stanford take a ridiculously low amount of transfers. as i told the OP, it’s VERY possible to transfer to cornell, along with a bunch of other great schools. for example, vanderbilt has something like a 40% transfer acceptance rate, and that’s a prestigious school. cornell takes plenty of CC students, so i strongly suggest applying. penn takes an okay amount of students. dartmouth, brown, and columbia take some, but not a ton. there’s a thread here on the transfer board that lists good schools with fairly high transfer acceptance rates, so you guys should search it and see which ones come up. i’d be happy to help, so feel free to PM me if you want :)
