Is it possible to transfer from Vanderbilt to UPenn CAS

I would like to transfer

I have a 4.0 for freshman year
Highschool GPA 3.82
SAT 1430 (applied to vandy TO)

Involved in solid EC’s
What are my chances?

If you are a freshman, they will look at your high school record. So the chances are very low unfortunately. Did you apply to UPenn last year?

Yes I did, I worked in a lab there last year with a strong LOR from a lab pi.

Is my high school gpa too low for me to transfer? Or sat ?

Were you originally accepted to Penn? The transfer acceptance rate is usually around 5%. If you were accepted to Penn from high school you might have a shot. If initially rejected, your odds are very low. Plus, you’ll need a compelling reason to transfer for your application. Vandy is a very good school. Why do you want to transfer?

178 of 3885 got in so your odds aren’t good.

But if you don’t try your odds are zero.

Good luck.

I’d say that the 4.0 from Vanderbilt (but you only have one semester of it) plus the strong letter from your PI (but you’ve only been with that lab at most one semester) puts you in the running, if you have a strong reason for wanting to transfer to Penn.

This is exactly what I am wondering.

It appears that the OP worked at a UPenn lab for one academic year as a high school student, and applied to UPenn for first-year admission with a letter of recommendation from the PI for the project at this lab.

Is that fine? Will they still consider the letter for transfer

If things are going really well at a college like Vanderbilt, I would usually strongly recommend you consider just running with that, rather than risk starting over somewhere like Penn with unknown results.

And I think Penn will largely think the same thing, which is why you need a really good answer as to why you in particular need to transfer.

I’d recommended you focus on making the most of your experience at Vandy. If you think too much about a potential transfer it can get in the way of your developing friendships, creating relationships with professors, getting involved in ECs, etc.

If you want to put in a transfer application nobody here can (or should) stop you. But understand that the odds of acceptance are slim especially if you were rejected in the last cycle. Your HS record will be part of the evaluation process if you apply to transfer after freshman year. And I agree with others that you will need a compelling reason for wanting to transfer.
