So my friends and I would really like to get all dressed up and go hear some live music–preferably from the Fred Astaire/big band era.

We are all under 21, so we would need somewhere that will at least allow us in even if we can’t drink (which doesn’t bother any of us).

In the Southern California/Los Angeles area.

I’d rather not spend too much money as I don’t have much, but if I have to I’ll pay the cover charge and just have something to drink/appetizers.

Is it possible, or are we doomed because we’re all under 21?

I know you parents are extremely knowledgeable about everything under the sun, so after at least an hour of Googling I’ve come to ask all your help. :)

My D (soph in college) and her friends LOVE to swing dance! I think they got started because a high school history teacher taught them a couple of dances in class. We don’t live in LA, unfortunately… But there are a couple of places they can go in our medium-sized midwestern city as teens. We have one local establishment that caters to them, and a swing dance club in our town that sponsors dances. D joined the Swing Dance club at college, where she met her boyfriend. There is an establishment in their college town they frequent, and they also took some road trips (to DC) for some bigger events. And she is teaching swing dance as an elective in the inner city summer school program she is working for. You and your friends are not alone in this interest!

my daughters school ( which the district just closed)
had integrated history/lit/arts.
they studied the WWII era in 5th grade and part of that included learning swing dance ( and performing).
The year before they had studied tap along with their history and lit.
( one of the girls toured with Savion Glover, when she was older- )
sounds like fun

I know in our area we have music in the park programs during the summer, every week it is a different thing, and it is free. I would suggest you go onto your nearby towns home page and see if they have one. I have never lived in a town that didn’t, and we have lived in 5 different states. In DC, it is every Thursday night on the mall. In Goldsboro NC it is every Tuesday, in Leavenworth it was every Weds. They’re alot of fun because you can bring a picnic dinner, some blankets or lawn chairs…best part is they are free! You also might want to look into open air amphiteatres.

Lots of younger people at the [PBDA - Home](http://www.pasadenaballroomdance.com)
They (Pasadena Ballroom Dance Assoc) are having a dance tonight and next Saturday as well with a live Big Band.
And later in the summer they have swing dance events in Old Town Pasadena. The admission to these dances includes lessons!
They are a fun group of people. And FYI the dances are usually a short walk from the Metro-rail.
Later in the summer, (if you want a fun splurge) check out the happenings at the Avalon Ballroom on Catalina. Their dance events are usually pretty spectacular http://avalonball.com

Try Hip Kitty in Claremont (pomona college area) I thought it allowed <21. Ck if Jazz Bakery has closed yet in Los Angeles. Also hollywood bowl can be very cheap but not dressy, they have jazz nights, bring a picnic. The Shopping Center by Hollywood bowl Hollywood and Highland , has free Jazz nights , I think Tuesday. Next month Temecula is having a Jazz Festival July 10-12, many events will be free, it will probably be hot. Rialto’s Alley Kat Jazz Lounge has Jazz / Blues - my son likes to go on Thurs, but I don’t know if it is <21.

Just saw you are in Long Beach. I got an email this am. Free latin Jazz at shoreline village tomorrow 2-5pm. It’s free if you have nothing better to do.

The Long Beach Municipal Band plays at different parks during the summer (like Los Cerritos, Wardlow, probably Recreation and El Dorado)–you can check out the schedule. I think they play a different style of music each week. It would be casual and a picnic, not dressy.
