No one in my family eats the ends unless my mom is visiting- she likes them. I take that back - if it’s an unsliced fresh loaf we eat them, just not in the presliced loaves.
I was raised to skip it. My mother saved it to toast to make her own bread crumbs. My husband loves the heel. He sometimes makes his own garlic toast from it.
Here, it is not uncommon for a round loaf of crusty bread to get a square look soon after coming out of the oven. We don’t like the sliced, packaged bread… it rarely makes appearance in our kitchen.
It’s my favorite slice. When I bake bread (round, artisanal loaves), I cut both* heels off first and usually eat one (have to test the loaf, right?) and save the other for next use. But, most often, I remove the heels and cut them into crusty cubes for dipping into oil or pesto as a delicious cocktail appetizer.
*ETA: Sometimes, with round loaves, I cut four heels (each “side” of the loaf), leaving the loaf rectangular/better shaped for toast/sandwiches.
I purposely pick them out and find them quite tasty.
The rest of my family doesn’t care one way or the other what slices they get. They will usually let me have the heels because they know I like them though.
It was the same for us growing up. My mom liked them. Others in my family would eat them interchangeably.
I was amazed when I went to a friend’s house in my youth and saw her mother cutting off the crust of her sandwich all over. She asked me if I wanted mine cut off. Uh, no. I asked my friend why she had hers cut off. The only response was she didn’t like it - no actual reason (taste, texture, etc) given. No biggie though. We kept playing.
I wonder if a poll would show that a lot of what we do mirrors how we were raised.
I love the crust on baguettes and artisan breads. On sliced sandwich bread, we usually use it for something else. We have been eating it during the stay at home though to get an extra sandwich out of the loaf to stretch out the need to go to the market. We’ve been rotating who gets stuck with it ; )
Depends what kind of bread. If we’re talking the fake prepackaged American stuff that squishes like cotton balls and comes in a plastic sleeve, pre-cut… yes. the end and the crust are gross.
If you’re talking about real bread, the European kind, with a crunchy exterior and a meaty inside – the crust and the ends are the best part. Duh.
I also love crust on baguettes, artisan breads, and pizzas. In fact I only eat pizza crust on a pizza. I also pick pizza place where they have the best crust lol. It looks strange and gross for someone to see my “left-over” pizza plate but my family is so used to eat whatever I don’t like and leave the crust for me.
On the baguettes - I take out the “meat” inside and only leave a small amount.
As for square sliced sandwich bread, I never understood why some people cut out the sides of the bread and throw them out. Sure it looks pretty but why?
In our household, we fight over the ends. And it’s not unusual for me to walk in and see a freshly-purchased baguette sitting on the counter with both ends already gone!
Yes. I don’t like a lot of the soft Bread crusts. Not that I’d be saving much because I rarely have those kinds of bread anymore and when I do, not like I’m needing the extra calories that those crusts provide. A lot of folks, a lot of kids don’t like the crusts.
