Is it really hard to transfer to UCB or UCLA from out-of-state CC?

Hi. I currently, enrolled one of CC in Washington State. I have a quite a good GPA right now 3.89/4.00 and I’m still working on my transfer degree. but I heard that 3 of4 transfer students are California CC student. Is someone transfer to UCB or UCLA from out-of-state CC?

It is difficult, but not impossible. A more important factor is the cost. Can you afford 50k/year?

Which major?

Here are some stats to look at from last year: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14.htm

UCB is raising their out of state admission rate by 1% each year for the next 3 years, so you have a pretty good chance. They are going to admit 20% out of state eventually, but they are still giving priority to students from California, and they will admit you only if you can pay (+ a good GPA for the major you would like to attend, You’ll have a better chance getting in to a non-impacted major than to an impacted major).

Agree with @moshe1010, apply to a lower GPA major. Assuming you want to switch into another, you more than likely can if it’s not impacted and in the same college (i.e., Letters and Science). However, in the off-chance you can’t switch be happy with what you choose, but assuming you have all or almost all pre-reqs for second major, it can probably happen. You can also go for a high GPA major, but might be a bit harder. They do like OOS tuition. So it’s potentially feasible, although they put a cap on OOS acceptances. They can’t go higher than last year, but they’d raised them these last few years.

Thanks for replying! I would like to major in Sociology or Geography. Do you think these major are non-impacted major?

What difference does the major make if the OOS tuition isn’t affordable.

Sociology and geography shouldn’t be impacted.

Here’s my question: why would you pay $55K a year, (220K over 4 years just for undergrad) at a UC for these majors? Repayment of these loans is going to be ridiculous.

Sociology majors (geography majors as well) typically go on to grad school since a BS in sociology doesn’t typically find a job in the field and further study is required. Plus the career pay in these majors is not great, near minimum wage in California.

Really, why does everyone go after a person if they want to come from OOS, and go on about the tuition? Every single time. You have no idea about anyone’s financial background. Trust me, a lot can afford the tuition without batting an eye. And really, if someone has a major they like why denigrate it? There are jobs in every major. Why would anyone want to come up here when a total stranger tells them their major stinks and they must have a screw loose to want to transfer OOS to a UC. I mean come on, respect people’s choices.

So, OP, you came up here to ask a question. I have attached a profile of UCLA GPAs by major. UCLA is the only UC that does this but it will give you an idea. Admitted transfer students to Geography had an average GPA of 3.61 (3.69 if its Geography/Environmental Studies, a growing field), and Sociology had an average admitted GPA of 3.71, on the higher end because it’s fairly popular.

https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm

And, just to add to this, OP is going in as a junior, so two years at a UC, not four. That’s about $110,000, assuming he has no other scholarships or aid. He’s at a community college now, so low tuition, maybe living at home. Four year CA resident at a UC is looking at about $120,000. So it’s less than a CA resident going four years - and they both end up with the UC degree.

Everyone up here seems to have aid, but something like 40% of UC students (CA residents) do not get aid of any sort. They’re paying over $100,000 for their education. So, it’s all relative.

I think Sociology at UCLA may be tough to get into from OOS. I have literally not met one transfer Sociology student who wasn’t from a CCC. Not saying there are none, they’re just scarce. I’m not sure about Geography…

I always get the cost in the first breath, since I know it would affect my decision. I wouldn’t want to give false hope that yes, a poster can get in, and then surprise them with the cost.

No, you were fine, luckie. And yeah, I was wondering about that. I don’t believe sociology is selective, but it did seem like a hard major to get into based on what people were saying last year, as I recall. OP could possibly pick a related major and possibly switch. I forget if you are majoring in sociology, candles. ??

My attitude about tuition is most probably know. If not, they find out soon enough. Private schools are $40,000-50,000 a year, so most probably have a concept. Of course, privates have more options for aid, usually.

^Excellent point

Yes @lindyk8 - I’m a Sociology major. I think there needs to be a word when things get worse than impacted, because that’s what Soc is at UCLA. It’s ridiculous. I took a class last quarter, where people literally had to sit on the floor to take the midterm. 150 seats, but about 175 enrolled. The prof was great got going that because it’s a required class that’s hard to get into, but why should a required class be so difficult to get into.

Sorry, rant over. Go Bruins???!!!

You’d think they’d be able to move it to a larger lecture hall. But I guess not.

@lindyk8 how did you get to $100K for CA residents? CA residents pay ~$15K/year tuition.

@moshe1010, They were talking OOS, 2 years, and I was including living expenses.

Oh, you meant CA residents, 4 years. Again adding in living expenses, so about $27,000 a year x 4, no aid.

It will be easier soon. UCs need money from out of state students if funding from California falls through.
