Hello all,
As described in my title, I’m asking to see whether it would look bad to write about the sexism I have faced as a female in computer science (international competitions etc). In my essay, I’m obviously not just talking about discrimination but how I have dealt with it and how it has made me a better coder.
My parents think, to be honest, that it seems really whiney and that I’m “playing the woman card,” which I definitely don’t agree with. All I’m writing about is my experiences.
What do you guys think?
I can read it and give feedback if you’d like. I’d say the topic is only risky if the essay is being read by misogynistic people. I hope there aren’t too many of those in college admissions, but I’d probably be surprised.
@halcyonheather Thanks so much for replying! I feel like my essay isn’t extreme at all. I talk about how people automatically assume I qualified for a prestigious undergrad competition because of A. connections B. money C. because I played the “woman card” (the competition qualification interviews are anonymous …) D. because my mentor has some sort of vendetta against all men (yeah …). I try to avoid whining or looking like I’m playing the victim card …
